Maintenance Guide
How to Keep Your Home Appliances Running Efficiently
Most appliance breakdowns build up slowly. Small habits such as cleaning filters, not overloading and noticing early warning signs can help your appliances work properly for longer. This guide covers simple, safe care for common home appliances. Always follow your manufacturer's manual, and never open electrical or gas components yourself.
Good Habits for Every Appliance
- Read the manual for cleaning and loading instructions.
- Keep appliances level, with space around them for airflow.
- Do not overload washers, dryers or dishwashers.
- Clean filters, seals and trays when the manual says to.
- Notice new noises, smells, leaks or error codes and act early.
Washing Machine
- Clean the detergent drawer and drain filter as your manual describes.
- Wipe the door seal and leave the door open between washes so it can dry.
- Use the right amount of detergent and avoid overloading the drum.
- Check hoses and connections for small leaks.

Refrigerator
- Keep door seals clean and make sure the doors close fully.
- Do not block the internal vents with food.
- Leave space behind the unit and keep dust off the coils, following the manual.
- Check that the temperature settings are correct.
AC
- Clean or replace filters regularly, especially during heavy use.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of debris and do not block airflow around it.
- Do not cover or block indoor vents.
- Have the system inspected by a technician if cooling or airflow weakens.
Dishwasher
- Clean the filter and check spray arms for blocked holes.
- Scrape food off dishes before loading.
- Run a dishwasher cleaning cycle periodically if your manual recommends it, particularly where limescale is a problem.
Dryer
- Clean the lint filter after every load.
- Keep the vent clear of blockages.
- Avoid overloading the drum. Lint build-up and poor ventilation can cause overheating.
Microwave
- Wipe the interior regularly and keep the door seal clean.
- Do not run it empty or use metal containers.
- Stop using it if the door, hinges or seals are damaged.
Cooking Range
- Clean spills and burner parts when the range is cool.
- Keep the area around the burners clear.
- If you smell gas, do not use flames or switches, open windows, leave the area and contact your gas supplier or emergency services.
See our cooking range service.
TV
- Leave space around the TV for ventilation.
- Consider a surge-protected power strip.
- Do not open the back panel.
When to Call a Professional
- Water leaks or standing water.
- A burning smell, smoke or sparking.
- A tripped breaker when you use the appliance.
- No heating or cooling, or a very noisy appliance.
- Error codes that return after a restart.
- Any smell of gas.
